Recently a request has been submitted to me from a potential client interested in the MULTICENTER with a doubt that this was proper to produce simple pieces.
The client concerned has a catalog of components composed by simple pieces, to be clear, with 2-way and 3-way fittings (L elbows and T fittings) and some manifolds, all of it for the thermosanitary industry.
So, his question sent by email was:
I would like to know if the MULTICENTER is proper also for simple parts. If the answer is yes, why?
In 3 days I was at his headquarters to better understand what problems was he experiencing and if the MULTICENTER was the most effective solutions or not.
After about twenty minuts of chatting, it was clear that the principal topic was the decrease of parts made for stock and, meanwhile, the required speed of delivery.
Having inflexible machines limits the possibilities to work parts with optimal and simple solutions and, even worse, they cause frustrations that leave you with a bad taste in your mouth…
When you receive these new parts to be completed, you may sometimes become dismayed at whoever designed them is such absent minded ways. Abuse is hurled at the component designers, who draw parts in 3D CAD without thinking about how to clamp the parts.
Relax… I developed for a customer, that has a family of 4-sided parts, a 360-degree flexible rotating fixture that allows them to finish the part in just one clamping.
How do you behave when a new part to be completed arrives on your desk with some operations clearly best suited for a lathe but others for a machining center?
The frustation to not have a competitive solution and so you have to pass the part through two machines; both a lathe and a milling machine. And if the quantities required are higher, it becomes necessary to consider a cell of multiple machines.
